Timothy Horng is on Arizona Republic!! (2/3/2010)
Timothy Horng, a 13-year-old IQ Abacus student attending at the Aim High Institute, a Chandler charter school, takes after his math-teacher parents. He made it to the state finals of the MATHCOUNTS competition about six months ago and is preparing for another contest this month. He also scored in the top 1 percent of 150,733 students internationally who took the written American Mathematics Competition (the AMC 8) by answering 23 of 25 questions correctly.

An eighth-grader, Timothy plans to take the AMC 10 next year. His favorite math subjects are geometry, algebra and solving equations that require critical thinking. He loves to play with Rubik's cubes.

WHY DO YOU LIKE MATH?

I like the challenge of it because it makes me think. I just want to try to figure it out.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN GOOD AT MATH?

I remember being a second-grader and doing fourth-grade math, My parents also run a math club, IQ Abacus, after school. I never thought it was hard to answer math questions.

DO OTHER STUDENTS ASK YOU FOR MATH HELP?

They just bug me to help them but I don't mind. It seems quite interesting to solve problems step by step. Math is in everything. It's my favorite subject.

DO YOU HAVE MATH "TOYS" AND WHY DO YOU LIKE TO PLAY WITH THEM?

I have an abacus and a Rubik's Cube. I can solve a Rubik's Cube in 50 seconds max. I like doing it because it looks better when it's all lined up with the right colors.
